# Multilingual Website Setup Guide

A multilingual website lets one site serve visitors in different languages. It is useful for foreign trade websites, global brand sites, product pages for different markets, and content websites with international visitors.

This guide explains how to add languages, set the default language, understand multilingual URLs, and check your pages before publishing.

## When to Use a Multilingual Website

Use multilingual settings when your site needs to serve users from different regions or language groups. Common examples include foreign trade websites, global company websites, product showcase pages, and content sites for overseas readers.

## Open Multilingual Settings

Open the project editor, go to **Settings** in the left sidebar, then choose **Multilingual**. This page lets you manage supported languages, the default language, and automatic language detection.

## Add Site Languages

Add the language codes your website needs. Common examples include `en` for English, `zh` for Chinese, `zh-CN` for Simplified Chinese, and `jp` or `ja` for Japanese. Keep the code consistent with your site configuration.

## Set the Default Language

The default language uses the root URL without a language prefix. For example, `/about` can be the default-language About page. Other languages use their language prefix, such as `/jp/about` or `/zh/about`.

## Enable Automatic Language Detection

Automatic language detection uses the visitor's Cookie or browser `Accept-Language` setting to send them to a more suitable language version. It is recommended when your site has many international visitors.

## How Multilingual Pages Work

The same page can have different paths for different languages. For example, the About page can be `/about` for the default language, `/jp/about` for Japanese, and `/zh/about` for Chinese. This structure is clear for both visitors and search engines.

## Content Maintenance Tips

Finish the default language first, then add other languages. Check page structure, images, links, forms, navigation, buttons, and SEO fields before publishing.

## Before Publishing

Make sure the language list is correct, the default language is correct, all main pages can be opened in each language, interface text is translated, and SEO titles and descriptions match the target language.

## FAQ

The default language does not use a language prefix because it is usually the primary version of the site. After changing language settings, publish the site again. Before removing a language, check whether that language version has external links or search engine traffic.
